Garden gates in Teesside
A garden gate in Teesside costs £150 to £400 fitted in 2026, covering the gate, the hanging post, hinges, latch and fitting. Simple side gates sit at the lower end, wide double gates and hardwood or composite gates at the upper end.
The part of the fence that moves
A gate does everything a fence panel does, then swings a hundred times a week while it does it. That is why gates fail first and why the hardware matters more than the timber. Most of what goes wrong on Teesside gardens is not the gate at all: it is a hanging post that was never braced properly, so the whole thing leans and the latch stops meeting the keep.
The usual types
- Side gates: the standard access gate down the side of a semi, matching the fence style, typically £150 to £250 fitted.
- Tall secure gates: full height with a boarded face, a bolt top and bottom and a lockable latch, sensible on terraced alleys and rear yards.
- Double gates: for driveways, bin stores or garden access wide enough for a mower or a barrow, generally £300 to £400 plus for timber pairs.
- Composite and hardwood gates: matched to a composite boundary or chosen for looks at the front of the house, priced above the softwood equivalents.
- Field and estate style gates: for the rural edges around Guisborough, Yarm and the villages, where a five bar gate suits the setting.
What makes a gate last
Three things. The hanging post, which needs to be bigger than a standard fence post and concreted deeper, ideally with a brace or a gate post kit. The ironmongery, where galvanised or stainless hinges and a proper adjustable latch cost a few pounds more and save a service call a year later, and matter doubly in the salt air from Redcar through to Hartlepool. And the ground clearance, because a gate hung too close to a rising path will drag the first winter the ground swells.
Security and children
If the gate is the only thing between a back garden and the street, say so at quote stage. A full height boarded gate with a top bolt and a lockable latch is a different specification from a decorative waist height one, and it barely changes the price if it is designed in from the start. Same for pet and toddler safety: self closing hinges, a latch out of a child's reach, and no gap under the gate that a small dog treats as an invitation.
Matching the fence
A gate looks right when it repeats the boundary rather than competing with it. Closeboard fence, closeboard gate with the same board width and capping. Lap panels, a framed and braced gate at the same height. Composite boundary, a composite or aluminium framed gate in the same colour. Mention what the fence is when you enquire, or ask for the gate and the run to be quoted together, which is usually cheaper than doing them in two visits.
